History
The West Virginia Division of Corrections, formerly a major division within the Department of Public Institutions, was established under Chapter 70, Acts of the Legislature in 1977. Under the executive reorganization of 1989, Corrections became a division of the Department of Public Safety (now the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety). The Commissioner of the Division of Corrections directs the state's adult correctional system. In November, 1997, oversight of the juvenile correctional institutions was transferred to the newly created Division of Juvenile Services.
